Colorado Breed Program

Colorado Bred Arabian Regulations

PURPOSE: The purpose of the Colorado-Bred Arabian Horse Program is to promote and encourage the breeding of quality Arabian racehorses in Colorado, to provide monies for awards programs, and to increase the value of Colorado Arabians by having them and their offspring eligible for these awards.

ELIGIBILITY: The Colorado-Bred Arabian Horse Program allows participation by sires, broodmares and racing stock, provided the following eligibility definitions are met:

  • COLORADO SIRE: Any purebred Arabian stallion registered with the Arabian Horse Association of America, and standing in Colorado during the breeding year, provided that he is enrolled in the Colorado brood-stock program before December 31st of the breeding year for all of his eligible foals.

  • COLORADO BROODMARE: Any purebred Arabian mare registered with the Arabian Horse Association of America, provided that she is enrolled in the Colorado brood-stock program before December 31st of the breeding year for all of her eligible foals.

  • COLORADO RACING STOCK: Any purebred Arabian foal registered with the Arabian Horse Association of America that is: 1) foaled in Colorado; 2) whose sire and/or dam is/are registered with COBRA in the Colorado brood-stock program before December 31st of the breeding year; and 3) whose owner submitted a completed application, together with the appropriate fees, to the COBRA Breed Registrar before December 31st of the foal's four (4) year-old year.

REGISTRATION: The Colorado-Bred Arabian Horses Program allows participation by sires, broodmares and racing stock, provided the following registration requirements are met:

  • COLORADO SIRE:
    • The stallion must be registered with the Arabian Horse Association of America. A copy of the stallion's registration papers shall be made available to the Registrar upon request.

    • In order for an Arabian stallion to be registered as a Colorado Sire, the owner, agent or lessee must pay the applicable permanent registration fee to the Registrar prior to December 31st of the breeding year for the foal to be registered in the Colorado-Bred Program. Registration as a Colorado Sire enrolls the stallion in an award program which awards cash prizes to Colorado Arabian sires based on the racing points accumulated by their eligible foals.

    • The owner or lessee of the stallion must be an active COBRA member in good standing at the time of application for registration of the stallion as a Colorado Sire.

    • Sires registered in the Colorado Sire program remain in the program for life, provided that all COBRA registry rules are complied with. Program benefits run with ownership of the Colorado Sire, and are transferable to lessees and successor owners.

  • COLORADO BROODMARE:
    • The mare must be registered with the Arabian Horse Association of America. A copy of the mare's registration papers shall be made available to the Registrar upon request.

    • In order for an Arabian mare to be registered as a Colorado Broodmare, the owner, agent or lessee must pay the applicable permanent registration fee to the Registrar prior to December 31st of the breeding year for the foal of the following year. Registration as a Colorado Broodmare enrolls the mare in an award program that awards cash prizes to Colorado Arabian mares based on the racing points accumulated by their eligible foals.

    • To be eligible, the Colorado Broodmare must be in Colorado at the time of foaling.

    • An annual report must be completed by the Owner of a Colorado Broodmare showing the location of the mare and her breeding and foaling status. The report must be returned to the Registrar by December 31st of each foaling year in order for her foals to be eligible for the Colorado-Bred Program.

    • The owner or lessee of the mare must be an active COBRA member in good standing at the time of application for registration of the mare as a Colorado Broodmare.

    • Broodmares registered in the Colorado Broodmare program remain in the program for life, provided that all COBRA registry rules are complied with. Program benefits run with ownership of the Colorado Broodmare, and are transferable to lessees and successor owners.
  • COLORADO RACING STOCK:
    • The foal must be registered with the Arabian Horse Association of America. A copy of the foal's registration papers shall be made available to the Registrar upon request.

    • In order for an Arabian foal to be registered as Colorado Racing Stock, the owner, agent or lessee must pay the applicable permanent registration fee to the Registrar prior to December 31st of the foaling year. Registration as Colorado Racing Stock enrolls the foal in an award program that awards cash prizes based on the racing points they accumulate.

    • For a foal's application to be processed, the annual Colorado Broodmare report for its dam for the year of its foaling must be on file with the Registrar.

    • To be eligible as Colorado Racing Stock, the foal must be born in the State of Colorado.

    • Eligible foals may be late-registered after December 31st of the foaling year, for an increased fee, through December 31st of their four (4) year-old year, provided the foal has not started in a race.

    • The owner or lessee of the horse must be an active COBRA member in good standing at the time of application for registration of the horse as Colorado Racing Stock.

    • Foals registered in the Colorado Racing Stock program remain in the program for life, provided that all COBRA registry rules are complied with. Program benefits run with ownership of the Colorado Racing Stock, and are transferable to lessees and successor owners.
